The Motability Car Scheme is designed to help those with mobility issues to regain their independence by helping them to buy, insure, and maintain a new car. Under the Motability Car Scheme, those who receive the War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement or the Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA can hire a new car for three years at a time. The car is paid for out of the relevant mobility payment, and all necessary tax and insurance is arranged, as well as breakdown cover, and regular car maintenance.
The Motability Car Scheme allows you to select up to two named drivers, who are permitted to use the car on your behalf. There is a generous mileage limit of 60,000 miles per 3 years on normal cars, and 100,000 miles per 3 years on Wheelchair Accessible Cars. The cars can be used for any journeys that benefit you. It is not permissible to use the cars for business purposes, such as for deliveries, or for taxi work.
Other than those limitations, however, you have a lot of freedom as to how the car is used. Your named driver can use the car for shopping, picking up prescriptions, or other journeys on your behalf, even if you are not in the car. You can use the car yourself for any non-business purpose you wish.
There are thousands of cars to choose from, including Wheelchair Accessible cars, and "green" low fuel consumption vehicles. There are around 5,000 Motability dealers in the UK. If you are interested in using the scheme then all you have to do is call your local dealer to make an appointment with the Motability Derby specialist. They will be able to help you select the right car to suit your needs, and will arrange for you (or your named drivers) to test drive the car.
The range of types of cars that are available through the scheme is huge and includes: Ford Focus, Toyota Avis, Audi A3, BMW 1 Series - contact your local Motability dealer Derby to find out more.
