Recently the scheme has received inaccurate and negative press - in regards to people receivng 'free cars' or 'tax payer cars'. While there is no doubt some people do abuse the system it is in fact nothing to do with Motability operations as a charity. In order to get a car on the scheme you need to be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance higer rate need to get around component. This is basically the benefit you receive if you have a disability. Motability have no control or anything to do with this issuing of these benefits. IHowever the negative press and inaccruate reports has still led to Lord Sterling, the Motability Car Scheme chairman, to make changes to the scheme. Here are some changes that have been made:.

• Only relatives who live within 5 miles of the claimant can become appointed drivers
• The car prices have been adjusted to accommodate models viable for the charity scheme. The highest priced car will be £25,000 and a £2,000 advance payment is required. However, Wheel Chair Access cars are exempt from the £2,000 rule. That means many luxury models could soon be phased out in the scheme. The change is due to take effect by the end of 2011.
• Nominated drivers under 21 years will no longer be eligible to drive the claimant’s car unless they live together in the same address.
• Drivers under the age of 25 years will be restricted to cars under the - ABI Insurance Group 16 where the maximum power output on the car is restricted to 115bhp

Not all is gloom though, as there are special cases that will be considered and exempted from these rules though only when necessary. For instance, if a relative lives outside the 5 mile radius from the claimant and there is no other option for an appointed driver, some leniency might be shown under the special circumstances.
Current contract holders will not be affected by the new rules but any future applicants will have to adhere to these changes.
