The Motability car scheme is an established service that helps disabled people to stay mobile. Under the scheme, recipients DLA and/or the War Pension that get mobility aid at the upper level can use all or part of their allowance to lease a brand new car.
How Does the Motability Scheme Work?
The Motability Car Dealers Scheme allows disabled people to lease a brand new car for up to three years. When the three year period is over, you can return the old car and change it for a new one. In addition to the car, the scheme organizes insurance, breakdown cover, and tyre replacement. You will need to pay for your own petrol, but most other expenses are covered out of your allowance.
There are several different cars available. Some of the cars require an advance payment, but there are hundreds of cars that do not require an advance payment, and some of the cars are priced at a level lower than the Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA. If you choose one of those cars, then you will only pay the cost of the car, and whatever is left out of your mobility payment will continue to be paid to you, so that you can spend it on other transport costs.
What if I don't drive?
If you don't drive, you could still be eligible to receive a car under the Motability Middlesbrough scheme. The scheme allows you to nominate up to two drivers that can look after the car for you. The car should be used for your benefit, but you do not need to be a passenger in the car at all times - so it could be used for food shopping, for example. However, you should note that only nominated drivers are permitted to use the car.
