The Motability Car Scheme is a scheme aimed at helping people with disabilities to stay mobile, and retain their independence. Anyone aged three or over that is currently getting the higher rate of certain disability related benefits may qualify for a car under the Motability scheme.
What does the scheme provide?
Running a car is expensive, and can involve a lot of hassle and paperwork. The people behind the scheme understand this, and the scheme has been designed to cover most of the major expenses of running a car. You will get:
- The lease of a brand new car for up to three years at a time
- Annual tax
- Insurance
- Breakdown cover
- Service and maintenance
- Regular tyre replacements
- Windscreen replacements if required
You will need to pay other costs, such as parking fees and petrol, but the scheme will make sure that you have a car that is taxed, insured, and ready to drive.
How do I get a car under the Motability Car Scheme?
There are 5,000 dealers around the country and Motability Dealers Newcastle. If you qualify for a car under the scheme (e.g. you receive the correct benefit, and have at least one year remaining on your award), then you can visit a dealer to find out what cars are available and take a test drive. If you cannot drive, then you can name up to two designated drivers who are permitted to use your car. Take your designated drivers with you when you go to look at the vehicles, so that they can test drive the car before you choose it.
If you need any modifications made to the car to cater to your disability, don't forget to tell the dealer, many modifications are available free of charge.
